German ministries disagree over coal phase out

Germany’s federal economy ministry has launched a white paperthat contains veiled warnings of rough times ahead for the coaland lignite industry, but falls short of calls for a defined phase out.The paper, titled ‘Electricity 2030 - long-term trends - tasks for thecoming years’, notes that because investments made during the2020s and 2030s will shape the energy system in 2050, “these shouldbe mainly technologies that do not rely on fossil fuels to avoidcompanies making stranded investments, and prevent expensiverepairs to the future system having to be shouldered by society.”
