The future of the remaining coal-fired power stations in theNetherlands, and the thermal coal imports required to sustain them, has taken another blow as the country’s House of Representativespassed a motion calling for an aggressive schedule of closures. The motion, which is to be voted on by the Senate during thecoming months, calls for greenhouse gas emissions reductions of 25%by 2020 and 55% by 2030, compared with the baseline year of 1990. Ifthe motion is passed by the Senate – something that is not guaranteedat this stage – it would likely initiate an intensified schedule of coalplant closures, according to sources close to the situation.
