The Newport and District Materials Society (NDMS) lecture programme for 2014-2015 began on 28 September, with a review of full-field deformation measurements by Professor Fabric Pierron of Southampton University, whose chosen field is composites. He explained that while the computing power currently available to researchers enables many engineering situations to be simulated, validating the reliability of the models requires much more real data than can be gathered through conventional technology, such as strain gauges and extensometers.
