The 2006 Sidney Gilchrist Thomas lecture on 'How to make industry-academic collaboration succeed' will be given by Professor Brian Wilshire from the University of Wales, Swansea, on 28 March 2006, starting at 6.00pm at the Conference Centre of Orb Electrical Steels, Newport. Professor Wilshire is known for his contributions to creep studies. He led the Materials Department at Swansea with distinction in a period when an Integrated Graduate Development Scheme and the first Engineering Doctorate programme in Materials in the UK were created. The Newport and District Materials Society has also launched a schools' essay competition in collaboration with Careers Wales Gwent and Corus Strip Products UK.
