Biofuels may fail to deliver significant reductions in greenhouse emissions and could be environmentally damaging, according to a report released by the UK's Royal Society on 14 January. Sustainable Biofuels: prospects and challenges warns that the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO), which comes into force in the UK in April, does not encourage the use of biofuels with the best greenhouse gas savings. The legislation requires fuel suppliers to ensure that five per cent of all fuels sold are from a renewable source by 2012, but does not stipulate a target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
