In BMW led cooperation project between the BMW Group and PSA Peugeot Citroen a new family of small Petrol Engines, for which the 1st generation have been used since 2006 in MINI and Peugeot/Citroen Automobiles, was further developed. Sheer driving pleasure by Efficient Driving Dynamics leads to a Technology expansion of the 1,6l Turbo engine in the cooperation project. Further development of this Engine family to achieve a fuel consumption reduction was the main target. In addition to this target the conflict between demanding Engine Technology and the pressures of cost in the small and compact vehicle segment had to be solved. To finally put these requirements into production, the most powerful Turbocharged engine with TVDI Technology (Twin scroll Turbo + Fully Variable Valve Train + Direct Injection) was used in a 4-Cylinder Engine - which was derived from the BMW Twin-Power Turbo Technology. The developed engines are of mutual know how and skills of both manufacturers, due to realization of the primary BMW target of the "Efficient Dynamics" and the primary PSA target of "design to cost" were consequently achieved.
