That statement comes to mind when I think of the work of our current Congress and the failed work of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, or the "Supercommittee," late last year.I have said many times in speaking to health care groups across the country and within Scripps that I did not believe the Supercommittee would reach a successful conclusion. Unfortunately, I was correct.We appear to be a country run by the extremes of both political parties—right and left—and our elected officials are in a constant state of running for re-election. As a result, reasonable compromise appears to be impossible. Elected officials and even the general public appear happy to support cost cuts and new taxes so long as they are not getting "their" costs cut or paying more taxes themselves.
