Process Knowledge and Product Characteristics Gained Using Casting Process Optimization

The U.S. foundry industry loses 5-10% of its revenues annually - $1.5-3 billion - to internal and external failure costs resulting from scrap and rework, raising the question of whether or not foundries operate their processes at optimum level. Although significant advances have taken place in metalcasting simulation software, molding machinery, binder formulations, and alloy development, there is a demonstrable need for process control capability to reduce the cost of production and improve profitability.
