Two of North America's largest industrial purchasers formed what they call a "strategic software initiative" with SAP AG, a top developer and supplier of supply chain management (SCM) and customer relationship management (CRM) software. Ford Motor Co. and Caterpillar Inc. expect to develop a "world-class service parts supply chain software solution." The goal is to improve the availability of spare parts at their manufacturing operation. Better service by parts suppliers is also expected. Last year, Caterpillar and Ford formed an alliance to develop a service parts-management software program. SAP is their choice to execute the development.
