Information revolution sparks age of discovery: Knowing the procedure lies at heart of it information literacy

Information literacy could be defined in the simplest possible terms as understanding the need to know things, and then knowing how to find out if you don't. The helpful definition offered by the American Library Association is almost equally pared down, saying that it is "a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognise when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information" (American Library Association, 2000). In the modern age, of course, in what has increasingly become an information society, this has also become increasingly tied in with an understanding of how to use technology.
