Manufacturing matters: Manufacturing can save the UK economy, but it needs help

A vibrant high-value manufacturing base remains of vital importance to a re-balanced UK economy, and Government policy should be directed to take a more active role to promote its growth - especially in the areas of education and skills. This was the main message coming from a high-profile debate held towards the end of last month. Organised by the Engineering Employers' Federation as part of its Manufacturing: our future campaign, the Question Time-style debate took place at London's Royal Society, where an audience of about 200 manufacturers and key 'stake-holders' put questions to a panel that included Siemens managing director Juergen Maier, cultural commentator Stephen Bayley, MPs John Redwood and John Hutton and former Financial Times business editor John Willman.
