HMI systems: tyre manufacturer's human-machine interface systems improve production and stock efficiency

Pirelli's tyre plant in Carlisle employs more than 1,000 people and produces some 13,000 high-performance tyres a day, mostly for prestige car makes such as Jaguar, BMW, Audi and Porsche, as well as for sports utility vehicles. At the hub of the plant's production facilities are 27 second-stage tyre assembly machines, which control the flow of parts to the final curing process. Until recently, these tyre-building machines were equipped with stand-alone data-capture hardware, which was non-expandable and did not provide the flexibility required by Pirelli to achieve improvements in both the quality and efficiency of its production. Tony Vorley, business manager for industrial IT at the plant, was assigned the task of replacing the existing system.
