After two or three frustrating breakages of the all quartz photochemical cell which was not the fault of the student or the equipment, we got to thinking, "Could there be another way of designing a much more simple type of cell?" After making half a dozen or so, I finally came up with this cell. Dr. Carty's group at the University of Waterloo have used this cell for the last two years with complete success. Cost was never in my mind when I was working on this cell; it only became apparent when we found what a saving we could make. Our last figure of a ready-made photochemical cell in quartz glass was around $300 to $400 for a 12 liter flask. We made ours at University of Waterloo for well under $ 100; even cheaper if one makes one's own graded seal.
