Safety and sanitation, from plant design to cleaning procedures, are a top priority for food processors and packagers. New design elements of packaging equipment are a vital part of this continuous evolution of food safety and sanitation. These new elements help plant managers more effectively implement cleaning practices and, in many cases, the new designs also create a more efficient overall process. Various organizations, governmental and private, offer guidelines to equipment manufacturers on sanitary designs - information that can be vital to plant managers and owners in selecting packaging equipment. While no single source exists to evaluate food packaging equipment sanitation design, there are multiple resources managers and owners can use to select the right packaging equipment and maximize the effectiveness of their sanitation practices. Packaging equipment designed around sanitary standards can help maximize cleaning efforts and minimize the possibility of error. Choosing packaging equipment that accomplishes these goals helps food processors remain profitable as well as maintain high standards for sanitation.
