Formerly when dietary fibers were characterized for the first time they were considered as dispensable, as dead weight with no function for the human body. Today it is well known that they have physiological properties as improvement of digestion, impact on satiety and reduction of blood glucose rise and cholesterol levels. Which is why they play an important role in the prevention of various lifestyle diseases, as obesity, diabetes, or diseases of the gut. Only recently a meta- analysis was published in the British Journal of Nutrition on dietary fibers indicating that especially the intake of cereal fibers seem to be protective against cancer, cardiovascular disease, and overall mortality. Furthermore the DGE (German Society for Nutrition) identified in their guideline paper on carbohydrate intake, a high consumption of fibers from cereals with a lower risk of Type 2 Diabetes121. The last aspect is particularly interesting with regard to the continuously rising numbers of diabetic people.
