Miniaturization and methanol mix in microfuel cells from MTI Micro Fuel Cell, a Mechanical Technology Inc. subsidiary. The company's first-generation methanol-fueled microfuel cell debuted last October, followed by a second-generation prototype in March and the third iteration expected in September-at less than half the size of the initial prtotype. MTI plans mass-market entry in 2004, based on 25 patents already filed, and assisted by recent funding awards from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and NIST's Advanced Technology Program.
