New Hashabi rootstocks for apple orchards in Israel. II. Performance under various cultivation conditions.

The performance of apple cultivars grafted on Hashabi clones (bred in Israel) was investigated. The best production was observed on MH 13-4, MH 14-5 and MH 15-6 rootstocks. Among Spur types, Oregon Spur produced the best yields when grown at a density of 2500 trees/ha and grafted on MH 14-5, followed by MH 13-4. Standard Golden Delicious and Jonathan cultivars on MH 13-4 rootstocks, planted at densities of 1250 or 1670 trees/ha, produced better yields than trees grafted on MM.104 or MM.106. Of theHashabi clones, MH 12-1 was the most vigorous, followed by MH 15-6 and MH 14-5. The least vigorous was MH 13-4. In Israel, all new apple orchards are now planted on Hashabi clones.
