Rootstock trail was established in the spring of 2006 at spacing 5x3 m. Hungarian apricot cultivars were selected to be grafted on the following rootstocks: seedling Dzanka 4, Aidemirska (both Prunus cerasifera), Zarzala K 1, Hungarian apricot, X.1.23 (all Prunus armeniaca) and clonal rootstocks Pumi-Select, "JO" ("St. Julien Orleans"), Ackermann, "JA" ("St. Julien A), GF 655/2 and Brompton. Trees were trained as free-growing crowns. The highest growth was induced by rootstocks Dzanka 4, Aidemirska and X.1.23 while the lowest by Ackerman and GF 655/2. The highest cumulative yield/tree was induced by Pumiselect, seedlings of Hungarian apricot and X.1.23, followed by Aidemirska and Dzanka 4 rootstocks. On the contrary, trees grafted on Brompton and Ackermann had the lowest yields. The highest yield efficiency per m3 of canopy volume was recorded for grafting combination with Pumi-Select, followed by GF 655/2 and Ackermann. The largest fruit size was recorded on trees grafted on Aidemirska and seedlings of Hungarian apricot. The highest percentage of dead trees was recorded in the combinations with Pumi-Select rootstock. Dzanka 4 and Aidemirska rootstocks induced a very high formation of suckers, followed by "JO" and GF 655/2. Prunus armeniaca rootstocks while no suckers were found when Pumi-Select was used.
