PSA Pseudomonas Syringae Actinidiae: No End in Sight

The highly virulent pathogen PSA bacterial disease is expected to cost the New Zealand kiwifruit industry about $120 million in lost export earnings this year. According to a new report this is just the tip on the iceberg. PSA (Pseudomonas syringae pv. Actinidiae) was first detected in a Bay of Plenty orchard in late 2010 and the disease has spread to more than 40 per cent of kiwifruit orchard land,almost all of it in the Bay of Plenty A report released in early May by Kiwifruit Vine Health, the organisation charged with leading the kiwifruit industry response to PSA, says the outbreak will cost the industry up to $410 million in the next five years and see about 470 jobs a year to be lost, along with associated flow-on impacts in other parts of the supply chain.
