Spain: a new customer for apples from South Tyrol

Like many other European apple-growing areas, South Tyrol has started harvesting two weeks earlier than usual. In the lowlands of South Tyrol, Royal Gala is picked as early as mid-August. Instead of after the holiday for the Assumption of Mary (15 August), the first deliveries were made from 10 August onwards. Gerhard Dich-gans, the director of the Verband der Siidti-roler Obstbaugenos-senschaften (VOG), admits that "August was not exactly a very active month for apple marketing", especially for theItalian domestic market. He stresses the significance of the UK and Scandinavia, which are interested in fresh produce surprisingly early.
