The US Senate and US House of Representatives had approved the chambers' joint conference agreement on the farm bill, and called on President George W. Bush to sign the historic 300 billion dollar, five-year bill into law immediately. The conference committee reported its compromise of the House and Senate versions of the bill on May 8, and their agreement was approved by a Senate vote of 81 to 15 and the House of Representatives by a vote of 318 to 106. These vote totals appear to be sufficient to override a possible White House veto. The 2007 Farm Security and Rural Investment Act - commonly referred to as the farm bill - contains unprecedented support for the fresh fruit and vegetable industry. It is binding on the new administration to take office in January 2009.
