Two water balance models for forest ecosystems are compared in the present study. The two models consist of an approach for calculating the evapotranspiration, using the Penman-Monteith formula combined with two soil water models of different complexity. One approach is a simple capacity model while the other one uses the well known Richards-equation. Water balance calculations for 6 Level-II-test sites with pine forests were carried out with the two simulation models. The test sites are operated by the State Forestry Research Department at Eberswalde (Landesforstanstalt Eberswalde). Weather data and local precipitation for the time period 1996-1999 and sod water contents for 1997-1999 were available. For three test locations the Richards model computes lower percolation and higher evapotranspiration rates and for two test locations higher percolation and lower evapotranspiration rates in comparison with the capacity model. However, both models showed similar simulation quality in regard to comparison of calculated and measured soil water contents.
