The Natural Gas Roundtable, a monthly Washington, D.C. event, on 2/22/11 hosted Christopher Smith, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Oil and Natural Gas, at the Department of Energy (DOE). Smith used the final report by the National Oil Spill Commission on BP's Macondo well blowout as a platform for discussing risk management. He told the audience of energy policy insiders that gas is key to the Obama Administration’s goal of generating 80% of electricity from clean energy sources by 2035. But government and industry must first cope with the risks of producing unconventional gas.
