The use of SMC (sheet molding composite) in automobiles has increased steadily since its introduction in the early seventies.A new high-volume application for SMC are cargo boxes for pickups and SUVs. The 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac is the first production vehicle to be fitted with an SMC cargo box. It is produced in Budd's North Baltimore plant. The inside of the box is a one-piece SMC molding weighing approx. 30 kg that features integrated stiffeners for increased structural strength. The external panelling of the box is also made of SMC.In extensive tests it was demonstrated that the SMC cargo box is superior to a conventional steel box: It is insensitive to rough treatment cannot dent and is corrosion resistant.Due to lower tooling costs, manufacturing costs in general are lower than with a multiple-part steel design. This is of particular advantage with low production volumes (specials).The up to 30 percent reduction in system weight compared with a steel design reduces fuel consumption, improves handling and allows additional equipment to be fitted in the vehicle without exceeding the weight class.
