INNOVATIONS and AUTOMATIONS: A LOOK AT TWO UNIQUE LAND-BASED AQUA CULTURE PRODUCERS IN THE NETHERLANDS

A chance meeting at the NACE/ICSR joint aquaculture conference in Connecticut last December led to a highly instructive day's visit to Yerseke, in Holland, to discover all sorts of unusual developments taking place there. As we took a field trip to amussel processing plant in Rhode Island, Marco Huissen, technical adviser of Murre Techniek bv, suggested that I should see the Dutch version. So I travelled to Yerseke expecting to be shown the latest technology in mussel processing. However, I soon learnt that, while Yerseke was the centre of shellfish processing in Holland, it was also a hotbed for innovation in other areas. Sometimes the drivers for these innovations were regulations imposed from outside, at other times the motivation was entirely with the developer.
