In a recent essay in the Guardian online, leditor Katherine Viner drew attention to the impact of social media on politics, public affairs and the daily lives of ordinary people. Her thesis was that we live in a communication environment where 'everyone has their own facts', and the consequences are far reaching. If facts become matters of opinion, there is no foundation of factual reliability and truth simply becomes a matter ofbelief.Examples of this are evident in politics. Rather than address the facts confronting them, politicians habitually disregard or redefine them to fit with their political needs.
