The method involves defining coordinates of a calibration surface with respect to a coordinate axis. Position values that correspond to relative positions of a holder (18) and a measuring desk (14), are determined before, during and after the measurement of the coordinates with a position determination system of a coordinate measuring apparatus (1). The measured coordinates are assigned to the determined position values such that geometric mistakes of the measuring apparatus are determined from the coordinates depending on the relative positions of the holder and of the measuring desk. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for determining geometric mistakes of a coordinate measuring apparatus.
