Devolution has, among many other effects, left the English Forestry Industry in something of a dilemma. The dominant role of providing public benefit is far more apparent in England, where the estimated value of public access alone dwarfs the economicvalue of timber production. This has led to a view, popular in the large private sector, that commercial timber production is considered of little or no importance, especially in lowland England, where markets, prices, the availability of contractors and local industry all continue to decline. That this should be, in the heart of one of the world's most voracious markets for wood products, suggests, perhaps, that the balance has tipped too far over the past decades.
