Domestic demand for almost all grades of timber is very strong, end user markets are steadily improving at the same time as imported timber supplies are still constrained.A mild winter has kept construction activity going throughout the winter whilst the winter storms have meant the fencing season started with a bang and has been flat out for all of the first quarter.Improving customer confidence coupled with new regulations that force companies to use low-carbon materials have also boosted demand for UK-grown wood. The new EU product labeling codes require builders to include embodied carbon emissions including those from material transport in the environmental reckoning for new buildings. This has encouraged companies to look for low-carbon UK-produced materials to minimize the reported carbon emissions they produce. Both private sector and government organizations are looking to source more UK-produced timber not just for house construction but also for fencing and landscaping products.
