Bob McDowall (15 September 1939-20 February 2011)

The death occurred recently of Dr Robert (Bob) McDowall (Fig. 1). Bob was regarded by many as the father of freshwater fish and fisheries in New Zealand but was also widely recognized internationally as an expert in the ecology, natural history, taxonomy, distribution, and evolution of freshwater fishes worldwide. Although most of his research was carried out locally, his contribution to fisheries research was global. McDowall was born in Palmerston North in 1939, the second youngest in a family of 5 and the son of a distinguished dairy scientist. He was educated at Palmerston North Boys High before embarking on a science degree at Victoria University of Wellington (1958–62).
