Flavoured yogurt pioneer farewelled: Vale Robert William (Bob) Irvine (16 February 1915-2 September 2012)

It is with great sadness that the dairy community farewelled Robert Irvine on 2 September 2012. During his long career with Dairy Farmers, Bob was instrumental in introducing natural and flavoured yogurts, among other then 'exotic' dairy products, tothe Australian palate. Bob helped Dairy Farmers grow into a food company by broadening its product line beyond simply plain and Bob was born in North Sydney while his father, Alexander, was away fighting the Great War. Upon his return, Alexander was granted a soldier settlement block at Tooles Creek in the Wagga district and became a farmer. Young Bob learned to milk cows on that farm in the early 1920s and rode a pony to a one-teacher school and then a primary school in Wagga.
