Since last writing on this topic a year ago, climate change and all its dire consequences have risen even higher up most political and personal agendas: mention of the Stern report, carbon footprints, food miles, or. unseasonably warm weather are evidence enough. And burning wood for fuel is one way we can all help. John Innes, in his article about the carbon cycle in the Encyclopedia of forest science, points out that using wood for energy is a far better way of helping alleviate global warming thanplanting trees to soak up carbon. Of course, if planting such trees in carbon plantations then leads to them being used for energy, better still. Such questions are under discussion in the review by FAO (UN Food and Agriculture Organisation based in Rome) concerned with the global outlook for planted forests. We live in momentous times for our profession as well as our nlanet.
