Plant sourced fertilisers in substrates for organic vegetable production

Sixteen organic fertilizers approved for organic vegetable plantlet production were analysed at FH Weihenstephan, Germany. The plant-sourced fertilizers were shredded broad bean, pea, lupine, oilseed rape and Ricinus. Other plant source fertilizersare vinasse (fermented molasses from sugarbeet processing), Maltaflor Special (derived from malt production with vinasse), Phyto-Perls/Fumisol (derived from maize processing), neem-cake (seeds from the neem tree) and Kartie-Shea nut Cake (derived from fat processing of african shea nut [Vitellaria paradoxa]). Fungus sources are Agrobiosol (fungus-biomass from penicillin production) and Bio-Vegetal7-4-7 (fermented fungus-biomass from yeast production). Animal sources are guano (bird droppings), hair dust(shredded pig hairs) and horn dust (a mixture of shredded cattle horn and hooves). Results presented are mineral contents (N, P, K) in the fertilizer, salt and N contents in the substrate at the beginning and end of cultivation, N release in the substrate and germination rates for the Lollo Rosso lettuce varieties Viktoria and Macky. Normal germination rates were found only after 14 days storage of the plant sourced shredded fertilizers. All fertilizers induced good lettuce growth compared to the control (horn dust and ammonium nitrate). The only negative exceptions were Vegetal and Maltaflor.
