This paper provides information on the Wood Education and Resource Center, a USDA Forest Service, Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry Facility located in Princeton, West Virginia, USA which aims to promote, maintain and develop a vibrant and dynamic hardwood industry. The different features of WERC are described in terms of its: niches and new directions; facilities; grants and cooperative agreements (national wood manufacturing industry skills standards, training information systems, hardwood flooring information initiative, management strategies for utilizing hardwood sawdust as poultry bedding, helping the wood products industry survive the next 10 years, and workshops for remaining competitive in hardwood lumber production); information exchange; and future directions..
