The spotlight sometimes shines upon the threat of terrorism against the food supply. The country's awareness and outrage is raised a notch every time -there is an incident, such as the recent intentional tainting of infant formula in China, where sixchildren died and hundreds of thousands were sickened. Although this incident was an intentional act and not terrorism, its repercussions were felt in markets and homes in virtually every country in the world. In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, theword "agroterrorism" (any act of terrorism designed to damage agriculture, especially by destroying crops or introducing pests or diseases) and the term "food defense" have crept into our everyday vocabulary. While food safety efforts concentrate on theunintentional contamination of food, food defense describes activities associated with protecting the nation's food supply from intentional contamination.
