摘要

Diabetes has become one of the most significant healthcare challenges facing the United States and worldwide. The numbers are alarming and sobering. The International Diabetes Federation has projected that the number of people with diabetes will grow from the current 382 million to a staggering 592 million people in 2035. In less than 20 years, it is suggested that 1 in 3 people will be affected by diabetes. Currently in the United States alone, there are nearly 100 million people either living with or at risk for developing diabetes. The U.S. falls just behind China and India in terms of incidence of diabetes. The largest expected growth among people with diabetes is in developing countries where resources are already scarce and limited. Current healthcare systems in the U.S. and abroad are unprepared to deal with the burden of this disease, especially from the financial perspective.1
