The head of a government-funded plant research agency wants biotech crops to be part of Australia's solution to drought and climate change problems. Peter Langridge, chief executive of the Australian Center for Plant Functional Genomics (ACPFG), told a conference in Adelaide that Australia is lagging behind other countries due to state moratoria on growing bioengineered crops. There are moratoria in all states except Queensland, although Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia are now reviewing bans due to expire in March.
