A proposal by the Netherlands allowing individual European Union member-states to block cultivation of EU-authorized biotech crops could ironically make it easier to grow such crops in Europe, according to an article in The Ecologist magazine.The Netherlands and Austria have proposed in separate papers that the final decision on allowing biotech crop cultivation be left to individual member-states ?effectively a re-nationalization of biotech policy. The proposed policy has gained support from European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso (see FCN Sept. 14, Page 5).
