The ILSI SEAR Australasia conference on saturated and trans fats was held on 17 June in Sydney. Its aim was to bring forward the best available data on saturated and trans fat (SFA and TFA), from both consumption and health perspectives, and to understand what is being done, can be done and the future challenges. The conference was attended by over 110 scientists from Australian universities and research institutes and by representatives of the food industry, advocacy groups, government and regulatory bodies. Associate Professor Barbara Meyer from the University of Wollongong presented a review of the fat intake in the Australian population based on data from the last National Nutrition Survey (NNS) in 1995. She indicated that the major food sourcesof saturated fat (SFA) in Australia are cereal-based products and dishes (eg biscuits, cakes, pies, fried rice, pizza, quiche, croissants, pancakes etc), milk products and meat. The first three cereal-based products and dishes are the top three food sources for SFA intake.
