ENVIRNMENTAL LEADERSHIP-Identity Crisis

This journal, Environmental Quality Management (EQM), first appeared in autumn 1991 (under the name Total Quality Environmental Management). The first issue covered the hot issues of the day, such as environmental information systems, data collection, auditing, compliance, pollution prevention, and regulations. Twenty years later, EQM still covers these same "traditional" responsibilities of environmental managers-plus a new array of topics such as sustainable development, energy and greenhouse gas emissions management, community and investor relationships, social responsibility, green marketing, and product stewardship.Regulations and compliance are still a primary function for environmental managers. Their scope has, if anything, expanded because of international product regulations such as Europe's REACH, WEEE, and RoHS.1 Unquestionably, the traditional roles and responsibilities for environmental departments have not diminished.
