Plastic food containers used for high-temperature applications are not completely inert, and potentially harmful chemicals may migrate to foodstuffs either through direct contact or from the vapour phase, thus compromising both the toxicological safety and sensory quality of the food. Migration from food packaging is therefore both a health issue and a legal problem in many countries, with attempts being made to harmonize legislation. Regulations from the EU, Mercosur and the USA require migration tests to ensure quality and safety of the packaged food. Tenax TA (a porous polymer resin based on 2,6-diphenylene oxide) is used widely as a solid simulant where the established liquid simulants are not feasible. However, due to its high price and its difficulties in handling and recycling, other solid adsorbents, such as Porapak or real foods, have been applied in several applications for migration of volatile compounds
