This article discusses possible adverse effects that may arise if segments of the US FDA and USDA are combined to form a single agency. Aspects considered include: the importance of food security and the risk of bioterrorism since the events of September 11th, 2001; and the possibility that the time needed to combine the existing, multifaceted authorities would jeopardize existing safeguards and compromise the food supply.
