FINAL SESSION OF MONTREAL CONFERENCE REVIEWS PIGMENT INNOVATIONS & REGULATORY RESTRICTIONS

First five sessions of the Smithers Rapra Conference in Montreal (7-9 October 2014) were reviewed in previous issues of 'Focus on Pigments', As for the opening session, the final conference session was a plenary session, bringing together delegates who had previously attended the separate sessions on TiO2 and coloured pigments. The final session began with a discussion of the special characteristics of aerospace coatings from Ms Karen Schultz (of Boeing Corp). There are currently nearly 21,000 planes in the combined fleets of the world's civil airlines and this total is forecast to increase to 42,180 by the year 2033. This means that orders for new planes will average about 1840 per annum over the next 20 years. Colour is a very important element of brand creation for civil airlines, with the exterior paint applied to the plane having a decorative as well as a protective role. White currently accounts for more than 50% of civil airlines' paint consumption, but bright high-gloss colours are becoming ever more popular.
