Upright stones add structure and depth

Place them to draw the eye, frame an entry, or enhance a mood. Most stone used in gardens is laid horizontally in the form of pathways, walls, terraces, or landings, but we have found in our garden in southern Vermont that long narrow stones set vertically in the ground add a whole new dimension. There are several ways to approach the use of vertical stones. A pair of upright stones can act as sentries on either side of a garden entrance. Or, when standing alone at the beginning or end of a path, astone post can draw visitors into an area, while at the same time adding a level of mystery. A number of granite posts set at regular intervals down the length of a garden can establish structure in an untamed area and add verticality to an otherwise fiat space. In addition to being ornamental, a standing stone can be used for practical purposes. It can sup port a mailbox or a lamp, or if you have it incised, it can act as an address marker at the end of your driveway.
