摘要

Invariably, when I am describing my garden to visitors who are seeing it before it has attained its full summer glory, I find myself standing on tiptoes and reaching my arms to the sky. Sitting on an average-size corner city lot, the footprint of my 1908 Edwardian house is such that the property is divided into three narrow strips and a larger rectangular area in back. Although I was a passionate newcomer to gardening, I knew intuitively that to accommodate my growing plant collection and to create the sense of privacy and space that I desired, I had to go up.
