Alan David Elbein passed away unexpectedly on 30 November 2009 at the age of 76, ending a distinguished carbohydrate research career spanning 50 years and over 200 glycobiology-related peer-reviewed publications. For the last 19 years, he served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. His research accomplishments in the field of glycobiology included determining the biosynthetic pathways associated with N-linked glycosylation in plants and animals, particularly in the use and characterization of glycoprotein processing inhibitors. His career bridged early training and association with some of the best known pioneers in carbohydrate biochemistry, including W.Z. Hassid, Edward Heath and Saul Roseman. In recent years, as departmental chairman, he mentored new generations of glycobiology and biochemistry researchers.
