Tuna market difficult

Higher costs of the main inputs into the tuna industry: fuel, steel, aluminium and - as a consequence of higher operation costs of vessels - fish starts to have an impact on the tuna industry. 2004 already saw a difficult market situation, and the opening months of 2005 were even worse. Bluefin tuna farming became very bad press, both accused for causing overfishing the bluefin resource and for spreading disease in the Mediterranean. Skipjack prices reached a peak of US 1 150 dollar/tonnes in October 2004, but have stabilized at about US 800 dollar/tonnes in May 2005.
