Fiber-optic based sensors (FOS) are now considered for integration in a large variety of harsh, or extreme, environments associated with applications in oil and gas, geothermal, and nuclear industries or medicine, space, fusion, or fission facilities and high energy physics. For this, FOS present numerous advantages over older sensor technologies such as their multiplexing capacity, electromagnetic immunity, low weight, high bandwidth, and potentially high temperature resistance. This special issue is devoted to the recent advances and future challenges concerning the OFS technology development as well as the components that are being used to support it. Among these extreme conditions, one could consider, for example, high temperatures, gas presence, ionizing and non-ionizing radiations, liquid metal or water impregnation, and so forth.
