Treated Inland Waters of Westerm Australia May Be Usable for Greenlip Abalone Cultrue

A study that compared raw inland saline water with ionically altered inland water as culture media for green lip abalone determined the raw water was unsuitable for aba-lone aquaculture. Additional research is required to understand the physiologicalimpacts of potassium ions and their relationship with other ions on the survival and growth of the abalone. Approximately 100 species of abalone occur all over the world, of which 11 are found in Australian waters. Australia currently contributes over 40% of the total global wild abalone exports. The two most important commercial species in Australia are the blacklip abalone, Haliotis rubra, and green-lip abalone, H. laevigata. The blacklip abalone are found in waters from New South Wales to Fremantle,Western Australia, while the greenlips inhabit waters from Victoria and Tasmania to Cape Naturaliste. Greenlip abalone occur in depths of 5-30 m, generally on exposed granite coasts or near reefs and islands.
