THE use of cropping rotations is benefitting growers in Queensland's floodplains by increasing their profitability. Relying mostly on summer crops, floodplain farmers have an advantage because summer grains are not heavily impacted by herbicide resistance and frequently have higher profit margins than winter crops. The rise of summer grains in double-cropping areas has seen some growers, researchers and advisers questioning the future of wheat as the backbone of production in the farming systems of NSW and Queensland.
